In situ xylem flow and water balance measurements in plants, based on Pulsed Field Gradient NMR techniques and T2 measurements

1. Variable ( 0.2 - 0.75 T) pulse NMR spectrometer (Maran, Resonance Instruments) for non spatially resolved relaxation time and diffusion/flow measurements. The spectrometer can be combined with a number of different magnets and probes for different object size and gradient strength.

2. One  0.47 - 0.7 T NMR imager based on a Bruker electromagnet system with an 10 cm air gap. Two different DOTY gradient systems are available with gradient strength up to 0.5 T/m. The system is under control of a Bruker AVANCE 200 console (installed in December 2000). A number of rf coil inserts are available, diameters ranging from 3 mm (for microscopy of small objects) up to 5 cm.

This imager is used for anatomical and functional imaging of plants, porous materials and living organisms in general, using (spatially resolved) proton relaxation time, flow, diffusion and magnetisation transfer measurements, and correlated information between these parameters.

3. A 3 T vertical bore Whole Plant Imager (building under construction, system has been ordered).

Latest news! Magnet arrived on November 29, 2001

The system will consist of a Bruker AVANCE console and a Magnex magnet (70 cm bore). Three different gradient systems will become available: a fixed 50 cm i.d. actively shielded set (gradient strenth up to 80 mT/m), a 15 cm i.d. set (gradient strength up to 300 mT/m) and a 7 cm i.d. openable gradient set gradients up to around 1 T/m).

4. One 9.4 T wide bore supercon research NMR spectrometer equipped with a micro-imaging accessory. This spectrometer also covers a broad range of applications, including in vivo NMR and high resolution micro-imaging.
